The Little Black Boy

My mother bore me in the southern wild, (a)

And I am black, but oh my soul is white! (b)

White as an angel is the English child, (a)

But I am black, as if bereaved of light. (a)

 

My mother taught me underneath a tree, (a)

And, sitting down before the heat of day, (b)

She took me on her lap and kissed me, (a)

And, pointed to the east, began to say: (b)

 

“Look on the rising sun: there God does live, (a)

And gives His light, and gives His heat away, (b)

And flowers and trees and beasts and men receive (a)

Comfort in morning, joy in the noonday. (b)

 

“And we are put on earth a little space, (a)

That we may learn to bear the beams of love (a)

And these black bodies and this sunburn face (a)

Is but a cloud, and like a shady grove. (a)

 

“For when our souls have learned the heat to bear, (a)

They cloud will vanish, we shall hear His voice, (b)

Saying, „Come out from the grove, my love and care (a)

And round my golden tent like lambs rejoice‟.” (b)

 

Thus did my mother say, and kissed me; (a)

And thus I say to little English boy. (b)

When I from black and he from white cloud free, (a)

And round the tent of God like lambs we joy (b)

 

I‟ll shade him from the heat till he can bear (a)

To learn in joy upon our Father‟s knee; (b)

And then I‟ll stand and stroke his silver hair, (a)

And be like him, and he will then love me. (b)

Analisa:

1. Pada bait pertama di puisi menggunakan rima A-B-A-A atau bisa disebut dengan Rima Patah.

2. Pada bait kedua di puisi menggunakan rima A-B-A-B atau bisa disebut dengan Alternate Rhyme.

3. Pada bait ketiga di puisi juga menggunakan rima A-B-A-B atau bisa disebut dengan Alternate Rhyme.

4. Pada bait keempat di puisi menggunakan rima A-A-A-A atau bisa disebut dengan Monoryhme.

5. Pada bait kelima, keenam, dan ketujuh di puisi menggunakan rima A-B-A-B atau bisa disebut dengan Alternate Rhyme.

Definisi:

1. Rima patah: Apabila dalam bait-bait puisi ada kata yang tidak berima sedangkan kata-kata lain pada tempat yang sama di baris-baris lain memilikinya.

2. Alternate Rhyme: Pada Alternate Rhyme, baris pertama dan ketiga berima di akhir, dan baris kedua dan keempat berima di akhir mengikuti pola ABAB untuk setiap baitnya. Skema rima ini digunakan untuk puisi dengan bait empat baris.

3. Monorhyme: Dalam Monorhyme, semua baris dalam bait atau seluruh puisi berakhir dengan sajak yang sama.
